Open Water Swimming Open water swimming is a sport of swimming endurance. The novice races are usually 1km long.
Junior races ( 12 to 16 years ) are 2, 3 or 5 miles.
Senior races ( 16 years + ) 2, 3, 5, 10 or even 21 miles.
To race open water you must be a strong swimmer, and must be able to withstand the cold temperature of the water.
If swimming in the British Long Distance Swimming Association ( B.L.D.S.A. ) events only trunks for males and costumes for women can be worn.
In A.S.A. events full leggings can be worn by both male and women swimmers.
Safety cover in the lakes is usually provided but must be checked with the particular event organiser.
In both codes points are given in each race which are added together and an overall end of season Grand Prix champion is awarded.
The A.S.A season comes to end at the end of August with the open water National Age Group Championships, the senior winners of which could well then be picked to swim open water for Great Britain.

Open Water training will hopefully start Monday 23rd May

Scarborough train in Wykeham Lake every Monday evening at 6:30pm after the pool session.
Entries to open water events are done on an individual basis.
