Learner pool sessions are held on a Thursday evening at: 6.00, 6.30, 7.00 & 7.30 pm and also on a Sunday at 8.00 am.
Each 30 minute session is based on the ASA National Teaching Plan and is conducted by an ASA qualified teacher.
There are 10 sessions in each set of lessons and the children are continually assessed and can therefore move up classes in the small pool, whenever their teacher feels they are ready.
Here are a few tips to help your child get the most out of their lessons:
Please get your child ready and send your child onto poolside about 5 minutes before their lesson; but not too early as the teacher’s attention needs to be on those in the water.
Please get your child to go to the toilet before the lesson, but if they need to go during the lesson don’t be afraid to ask the teacher, the answer is always yes.
Please wear gender appropriate swim wear. The figure hugging type is best suited for learning to swim; save board shorts and swim skirts for the beach. (excess material captures air or can wraps around the legs hindering movement)
Please tie back long hair (this does not always apply to just the girls) or better still wear a swim hat. You will notice that most of the older swimmers in the main pool male & female wear hats. Club hats are available from the Club’s swim shop.
If your child needs armbands encourage them to get them from the box and put them on themselves, their teacher will happily help if necessary.
Please tell your child to listen to their teacher, try not to coach them from the balcony or cafe. We appreciate that you are trying to encourage them but they will start to look at you rather than the teacher during their lesson. Tell them that you are watching . You can practice what they have learnt with them in an open swim session.
The ASA National swim plan is available to view on the British Swimming Website. A copy is available on Club night, we also have some copies of the parents handbook for your perusal. NB: Much of the criteria in the plan for the first 3 levels (which we teach in the small pool) is based around movement, games* and safety. We at SSC have always introduced basic swimming technique from the first lesson and will continue to do so, but please don’t think we are wasting time playing games.
* Learning through play, fun movements which simulate swim techniques. Eg. The train game – moving arms like train wheels, Ch Ch train noise = alternate arm stroke – front crawl, shoulder rotation, breathing control.
